Relational Practice with Sabra

January 31 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every 2 weeks that begins at 5:00 pm on Monday, repeating until August 29, 2022

The Relational Practice we will explore is a combination of different forms: Soulmaking Dharma, Insight Dialogue and the Diamond Approach. Most simply, relational practice could be seen as tracking one’s internal experience out loud with another person. It is generally done with one or two other people. The form varies and is quite fluid. It usually begins by sitting in silence grounding, attuning and sending kindness to yourself and the other. Then one person speaks, narrating their internal experience for a pre-determined amount of time. Then the other person does the same. Sometimes there are two rounds like this. Sometimes three. The witness is simply receiving the other and watching how their body responds to the other’s words and expressions. At the end, some time is taken for open dialogue, the sharing of impacts and reflections. What was it like to speak? What was it like to listen? Did anything the other said strike you or resonate?

Over the hour, we will begin by sitting in a brief meditation, I may share some information about the practice, and then we will break out into dyads to practice. We will come back together to share any take aways with the larger group. This powerful practice:

  • Slows down personal interaction and allows us to see how deeply impacted we are by speaking and listening.
  • Reveals some of the habitual limitations we’ve formed around energetically opening or voicing our authentic experience.
  • Trains attunement and our empathic capacity.
  • Strengthens our ability to stay connected to our internal experience and remain embodied while listening, something that can be quite challenging.
  • Helps us learn what this body needs to build trust and intimacy.
  • Unwinds the concept of communication as a performance of the Self for the other.

Finally, it helps us as we are moving in our healing from a trauma body orientation into a more regulated body. It does this by developing our ventral vagal response system, so that we are not always operating out of our fight or flight, but instead from the part of our nervous system that trusts that we are safe and is built for social engagement. This practice is deeply transformative in ways Western culture is hungry for right now. Together we will learn how to embody the paradox of our autonomy within the truth of our profound connectedness.

We will meet in the studio upstairs at Good Medicine Collective at 231 York Street. There is a 3 tiered sliding scale investment: $10, $20, $30. Please register here. Email me with any questions!

With love, Sabra (Sabrasaperstein@gmail.com)
